PART I – Design, Complete and write up your research study.
Research:
1. Read the relevant material in your textbook.
2. Read the articles provided above on the exposure and impact of media violence on
children.
Experimental Design: Design your own observational coding scheme based on your reading of
the research articles and watch 5 hours of children’s television programming to measure the
1. Amount,
2. Severity and
3. Type (form)of violence depicted.
See tips for developing an observational coding scheme found below.
□ You will need to select when you will watch (day and time) as well as the networks or
channels you will watch.
□ You will need to define children’s programming for the purposes of your study.
□ You will need to define what you mean by violent television programming for this study.
□ You will need to determine how you can convert what you see on TV to something that is
measureable (quantitative). Which methodology will you use? Time or event sampling?
□ How will you define
1. Amount,
2. Severity &
3. Type (form) of violence?

Write a Final Research Report in APA format
Use The URL below for details on APA format :
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/reference_li
st_basic_rules.html
It should include the following:
Title page
Introduction
□ Provide an over view of research findings regarding violence in children’s programming
based on the articles provided (all 3 research articles must be discussed).
□ Provide an operational definition of violence television
□ Provide an operational definition of children’s programming
□ Describe the research question to be studied
□ Give your hypothesis
Methodology
□ Describe your study in enough detail that another researcher could replicate your study
o Include day & time of observations, select times when children would normally
be watching television. (Other options such as Netflix can be used but should be
described in detail)
o Describe how you selected “children’s programming”
o Identify the programmes that you watched
o Include details of your 5 hours of observations
▪ Did you use time sampling or event sampling?
▪ Give the specifics of how you counted the acts of aggression you were
watching for.
o Describe your observational coding scheme – how did you measure
1. The number of violent acts you saw and counted
2. The severity (i.e. Mild, moderate & severe) of each of the violence acts
you observed and
3. The type of violent acts (i.e. physical, verbal, relational/social) you
observed.
Remember to observe for all three and record and report measurement of all three.

Results
□ Summarize your findings for frequency, severity and type of violence observed during
5 hours of children’s television programming that you watched.
□ Include a graph or table to visually summarize the data
Discussion

What can you conclude based on the children’s programmes you watched for 5 hours?
What are the problems or weaknesses with your research study? (Limitations)
What would you do next if you were going to conduct another study? (Future directions)
What would you recommend to parents based on your findings? (Implications)
Reference List
Include all the research articles, books etc. you used in the Introduction of your paper. This
includes the 3 research articles I provided as well as any that you found on your own.
uide/apa_sample_paper.html for formatting using APA version 6
□ Final paper should be in 3rd person past tense, 12 point Times New Roman font, doublespaced, and one-inch margins. Final document should be approximately 5 pages long.
Appendix
□ Provide all your actual raw data from your 5 hours of TV watching in an Appendix at
the end of your paper. This can be hand written or on sheets with check marks etc.
Provide whatever you used to record your observations. Photos of the raw data coding
sheets should be included in your upload. It does not need to be typed or pretty but it
should clearly depict to me how you recorded what you observed while watching the TV
programmes you selected.
□ Provide your three 1-page article summaries
□ Provide the score rubric
BONUS MARKS: Final Reflections (5 Bonus marks for completing the following questions).
Add as a separate page at the end of your paper before the scoring rubric
1. What was the biggest surprise you encountered in conducting your Violent TV Assignment?
Explain why it was so surprising. (1.5 mark)
2. Give an example of how conducting this experiment was helpful in understanding some aspect of
the course material and in helping relate theory to real life & how it impacted on you. (1.5 mark)
3. Give two suggestions for improving the Violent TV Assignment. (2 marks)

Tips for Developing an Observational Coding Scheme
Task: To code 5 hours of children’s programming (to be operationally defined by you) for
violent content (to be operationally defined by you).
Method: Naturalistic Observations
Issues to think about:
1. The terms “children’s programming” and “violent content” are very broad and could
include many things. You could use another researcher’s definition or you could come up
with your own. Carefully defining your constructs will help with your observations
immensely. It is Ok and even advisable to limit the behaviours you will watch for and
code.
2. Many things will occur at one time. How will you deal with this? You could videotape
and then slow down the tape to watch or you can select a few specific behaviours to
watch for and record. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Consider these.
3. You need to be able to convert what you see into something that is measurable or
countable. One way is to event sample and to count every single violent act that occurs
during the time you are watching. This gives a wealth of data but takes a lot of time. The
other strategy is to time sample. When you use this strategy you set a watch or timer to
beep each minute or 30 secs and you record whether any violent acts occurred during that
time interval (yes or no the behavior did or did not occur; using this strategy you do not
count the number of occurrences, only whether or not it occurred during the time
interval). You need to select the strategy that will work best for you.
4. Prepare yourself as you will need to watch closely and listen attentively. You need to be
able to capture important detail while at the same time discern what is important. It is
better to collect a smaller amount of accurate data than to try to observe too many things
at one time and to end up with flawed data.
5. A good observer takes care not to make inferences or judgments or let their own biases
creep into their observations. They record only what they see and hear.
6. You are to observe for three things:
1. The number of violent acts,
2. The severity (i.e. Mild, moderate & severe) of the violence depicted and
3. The type of violent acts (i.e. physical, verbal, relational/social) depicted.
Remember to observe for all three and record and report measurement of all three.
