GUIDELINES, REQUIREMENTS, and SUGGESTIONS
Guidelines
In this essay, we will combine Augustine’s narrative approach to philosophy with Aquinas’
systematic approach. Accordingly, the essay will have two parts.
In the first part, compose a monologue, dialogue, or other fictional narrative in which one or more
of the characters engage in moral deliberation. The deliberation should make use of synderesis,
conscience, natural law, and human laws.
In the second part, analyze the narrative and explain wherein synderesis, conscience, natural law,
and human law occur. Your explanations should justify the claim that, for example, this is an instance of
synderesis or that is an instance of conscience. (For example: “When so and so says this, he is using
synderesis, because synderesis is such and such.”)
Requirements
1. SPELLING AND GRAMMAR: Your essay must be free from spelling and grammatical errors.
If it is clear that the essay was not proofread, it will receive a zero.
2. WORD COUNT: Your essay must be at least 800 words, preferably no more than 1000
words. If it is less than 800 words, I will not accept it.
3. DOUBLE-SPACED: Your essay must be double-spaced so that I may comment between the
lines.
4. MORAL DELIBERATION: The narrative section must contain moral deliberation featuring
synderesis, conscience, natural law, and human law.
5. DEFINITIONS: In the analysis, you must define and explain all key terms, including
synderesis, conscience, natural law, and human law.
6. ARGUMENTS: Your essay must contain brief arguments for the definitions. These arguments
must be Aquinas’. You must also explain why your narrative is an example of synderesis,
conscience, natural law, and human law.
7. QUOTES: You must quote and reference the text to support your definitions and arguments.
All citations should include Part, Question, and Article (e.g. ST I-II q 90 a 1, or ST I q 79 a
5). If you wish to quote Augustine, include Book and Chapter (e.g. II.4).
8. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES: You must not use any other sources than the text. Cited use of
other sources will result in a lowered grade. Uncited use of other sources constitutes
plagiarism.
9. BLACKBOARD PDF: You must upload a PDF or DOC to Blackboard by 00:00 PM on ()[]. If
the essay is not uploaded, it will be considered late.
Suggestions
1. You should visit the bla bla bla (see Mr. Anonymous, if possible) for help at any stage in the
writing process. When you go to the bla bla bla, make sure you have a specific goal in mind.
2. You should have someone proofread and comment on a draft of your essay.
3. When proofreading your own essay, read the essay aloud slowly to spot errors or awkward
phrasing.
4. You should write the essay a week before it is due, then return to the essay a few days later to
revise and rewrite if necessary.
5. If you have any questions about the assignment, or if you want me to look at a rough draft,
you should email me or meet with me as soon as possible. I will comment on rough drafts
only if I have time, so the earlier you send them, the better.
