Simile and Metaphor
Uglies is a science fiction novel by Scott Westfield. Tally is the main character, who

The author of the book has used literary styles to make the story much more fun and enjoy for
reader. The author also uses metaphor and similes in the story to describe more accurate about
the story.
First of all, some of the metaphors and similes used in the book. For instance, “Rock
climber facing a sheer cliff” (simile) (8,9). Tally is going to one of the building in the prettiest
two, where most of the beautiful people have their party. And she disguised with a pig mask. Her
purpose was to run away from the party. She is going to looking for her friend, who name is
Perris. The situation makes her feel like she was a rock climbing a sheer cliff.
Furthermore, metaphor have used in the book also. For example, “Snarling monster”

Even though Tally knew that is dangerous, but she still agrees. Moreover, Shay told Tally that
“the water in the river was white.” After Tally seeing the changes happened on the river thought
that the river becoming a “snarling monster.”
“A bright coin nestled in darkness” (55) Shay and Tally visit the Rosy Ruin and is
amazed by the wilderness and nature at night, which is around the ruins. Tally was trying to
figure the image of her town in the past and now and realizing that her city is a golden coin has
been nestled in the darkness. To her, that came a shock in small size hence the currency where all
the people will live in the nest. The world at that point is compared with darkness.
